On Monday, Jeremy Pruitt and Company collected another nice feather in their cap on the recruiting trail. Offensive line prospect Chris Akporoghene pledged to the Big Orange.
Akporoghene is a very intriguing prospect. He originally hails from Nigeria and he has only known about and played football for a short period of time. As a result, he is only just now starting to tap into his overall potential. Akporoghene has shot up recruiting boards and his ascent could continue in the coming football season.
247 Sports lists him at 6-foot-4 and all of 290 pounds. Rivals.com says 6-foot-5, 280 and ESPN has him pegged at 6-foot-4, 283. Any way you slice it, Akporoghene is a big dude and is a guy that could certainly fill out his frame and pack on additional pounds. He is also versatile enough to play guard or tackle at the college level.
Often times, people can get infatuated solely with recruiting rankings but another important aspect to pay attention to is the number of legitimate scholarship offers a recruit possesses. Akporoghene has north of 30 offers from programs around the nation.
He currently holds offers from the likes of: Oregon, Nebraska, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Washington, Mississippi State and South Carolina and they all want him for good reason.
Check out Akporoghene’s tape and you’ll see a player who’s rough around the edges but who has the size and ability to eventually fit in well with a smashmouth SEC offensive line…
The Oregon Ducks were perceived to be Tennessee’s biggest competition to get Akporoghene’s commitment. Pruitt and crew were extremely persistent, recruiting him as one of their top priorities in the 2019 class.
The Volunteers now have commitments from a set of stud offensive linemen including blue chips Jackson Lampley and Wanya Morris along with Akporoghene. Clearly, the o-line is a big priority for the coaching staff, and their efforts are paying dividends so far.
If he meets his potential, Akporoghene is a guy that could end up being a monster in the trenches for Tennessee and his addition makes the future of the Vols offensive line even brighter.
